Loaned my grinder to a guy last summer. He brought it back with the wheel almost gone. But he did buy another wheel and said he put on a cut-off wheel and then put my wheel back on. Anyway, I just tried to take off the used wheel and the spanner nut is so tight I broke the wrench that they give you to hold the shaft from turning. How do people put things on that tight and why do they do that? Now I have to break off the wheel so I can get a pipe wrench on the spanner and grind a 3/4" wrench to fit the narrow gap on the shaft. I tell ya.

I assume no grinder has a thread such that the nut would unscrew from the torque of the wheel spinning. In which case it seems likely that it tightens itself while spinning instead.

Fun fact: here in Rhode Island we refer to long sandwiches (subs, hoagies, whatever) as grinders. I would not lend somebody my grinder. It good, and it mine.

Fix grinder, use it to grind off your friend's genitals.

Exactly. You are supposed to just lightly tighten it and the nut will tighten itself more when you use it. I don't know what he did but I did not give him the wrench set that comes with the tool. Figured he was just going to used it and not need to change wheels.

What I meant was that if he did enough grinding to use up an entire wheel, maybe it tightened itself that much.

No need to grind a wrench to fit between the grinder and the wheel, there is a button on the top on the grinder that holds the wheel still so you can remove the nut. You can just see it on top of the grey part in your picture. We've got a couple of those Milwaukee grinders, they're excellent.

Use vice grips to get the nut off. Done it many times when I lost the tool.

I very rarely lend tools out anymore, never got them back without damage. A couple of times I had the tool replaced with better quality units! Why they didn't just go buy themselves the tool in the beginning I don't know?

Your post caused me to do some Googling to see if it's possible to just buy replacement angle grinder nut wrenches. That, in turn, somehow brought me to a post full of photos of angle grinder accidents (disc explosions, mostly). I may never use an angle grinder again...

And which way does the blade spin, relative to it? The same way, I assume?

I have a service center locally where I can buy a new one. This thing is on too tight to get off with the 10 gauge steel wrench they supply. I bought a wrench at a pawn shop for a buck fifty. Will use my other angle grinder to make it skinny enough to fit. Jeez, not what I need to see. I have 3 angle grinders and I don't want to never use them again. Moral to that story: Don't buy your discs from Harbor Freight.

Good point. I guess from now on my reasoning will be: If they won't buy one, they should not borrow one. The one time I lent my Saws-all it came back with damage too.

A good possibility. Never had one get that tight before.

That was a stock pic I pulled from the net. My 2 Milwaukee grinders are older and don't have that feature. I bought a 3/4 wrench at a pawn shop for $1.50, will use the other grinder to make it fit today.

Yep, that's it. Can't buy it, don't borrow it.

Stay strong and keep the tool inventory quiet. If they need a tool and they are prepared to drive over and pick it up just go with them, do what is needed, have them supply beers and return you and the tool. WINNING!

Good point. Did not think that would work so I bought a 3/4 open end wrench at a pawn shop for $1.50 and will use my other angle grinder to make it fit today. Thanks for the tip, though.

"tool" Einstein? Not sure if it's a compliment or not? Either way I'll take it.

Paperwork on the way.
